Double Entendre – ‘encore for Megs’

“Anyone under eighty who can remain seated for their Balkan barbershop-doof-barnyard-rasta hoedowns needs their pulse checked!”
-Fairbridge Festiva
Stirring up a crazy dance-storm, encouraging much sea-shanty singing, hoedown-skank-boot-scooting and other shenanigans, Fremantle gypsy-rock-jazz-dub collective, Double Entendre will once again blast their original brand of GypRock across their sunny home shores on Saturday the 8th of May at the Fly By Night Musicians Club. Much has happened in the last two years, and after disappearing on their own journeys of debauchery and rambunctiousness, the original vagabond members of the band find themselves converging in the same place and time once again and are geared up to put on an unforgettable one-off show.
Fashioning their own rickety musical caravan from scavenged pieces of gypsy, dub, afro-beat, flamenco and folk-rock, Double Entendre had something of a cult following in Freo, prior to disbanding in 2008. The band had spent 8-months touring Australia in their clapped-out schoolbus, hitchhiking with their drums, guitars and a double-bass named Cedric and playing countless shows around the country with friends and idols alike from The Cat Empire, The Beautiful Girls and Blue King Brown, to Tinpan Orange, Eskimo Joe and Dallas Frasca.
This special one-off show is a special encore in memory of the band’s biggest fan and sister to Ash (the band’s songwriter/guitarist), Megan Fertch, who was always smiling and singing in the front row. All money raised on the night will be donated in Megan’s name to the Starlight Children’s Foundation to assist the great work they do in brightening the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children whilst also providing a support network for their families.
Formed in Fremantle in 2004, the band was awarded Best World Music Act at the 2007 WAMi Awards in Perth, and worked up a sweat around the country taking their highly original homegrown tunes to nearly every corner of Australia.
The band have experienced some interesting trials and tribulations, but have survived the journey long enough to bring you the kind of live show vibe that can only leave you with sore limbs and a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
The show at the Fly By Night will be something very special, with the appearances local bands, The Brown Horn Orchestra, The Lonely Brothers and Echoes of Django. Everyone is encouraged to come in any kind of fancy dress they can muster (gypsy/pirate/fairy/carnie…whatever!), as this is set to be a Gypsy-Rock Celebration that won’t be easily forgotten!
Tickets are on sale now and selling fast at www.flybynight.org
