Newly returned from a successful stint at Japan Music Week in Tokyo, Perth's Natasha Bouchard will perform at Ellington Jazz Club on Thursday February 4th.
The evening will feature some of her new work inspired by her time in Japan; the debut performance of these songs on Australian soil. Bouchard will have some high-class back up in the form of some of Perth's finest Jazz musicians.
Japan Music Week proved an encouraging time for the young Perth songstress, who was considered to be the "star of the Festival" by the event's Director. When she wasn't busy giving the type of moving performance that earned her such an accolade, or attending industry conferences, Bouchard managed to pen some new material during her precious quiet moments in Tokyo.
"One song is based on a stay in a Buddhist temple," she said. " Another is inspired by the underground metro [train] system. It's like a dance, the way everyone moves down there!"
The bustling, high-energy city of Tokyo provided the perfect food for creativity.
"I get really inspired by cities," Bouchard said," there's so much stimulation; Tokyo is like a maze. I got lost every single time I went to a gig!"
Another result of her Japanese excursion has been the motivation to hone her skills on the cello; her first love when it comes to musical instruments.
"The cello is close in sound to some beautiful traditional Japanese instruments", she said.
The aim of Japan Music Week was to expose Japanese audiences to western music. Bouchard met many Australian musicians showcasing at the festival, and fellow Perth representative Simon Kelly was also a hit.
The response to Bouchard's performances, from both audiences and venue managers, was highly positive; many venues expressed interest in booking her for future shows, and want her to play alongside Japanese bands. On top of that, this talented acoustic singer/songwriter is now under the watchful eye of some international record companies, producers, and managers, all of whom have spotted something worth keeping close tabs on.
Now back in Perth, Bouchard is keen to share the results of her experience with a home crowd. Her performance at Ellington Jazz Club will feature Rick Eastman on Drums, Peter Jeavons on Double Bass, David Sandercock on grand piano, and Emma McCoy on cello.
