We caught up with Why Wednesday at
The Basement. Why Wednesday are a 4 piece original band
from Perth. What you receive from Why Wednesday is certainly
not what you expect from first impressions. Their casual
attire and laid back attitude does come close to hinting
that their music is tightly woven together to produce
a smooth sound from the band.
You can't help getting off on the
music - it demands it!!! When a band is obviously enjoying
their own music, you can't help but get carried away
along with them. Deserves a closer inspection, their
music begs to be played - played strongly not only in
a pub but everywhere. If this band doesn't go places
then there is something seriously wrong with the world!
Playing with ease and a totally comfortable
attitude to a live performance, and you can feel the
underlying sense of fun in their performance. See this
band in the intimacy of a pub surrounding before they
get huge and move on. If you miss this band then you
are missing one of the best original bands that Perth
has produced in recent times. Lead vocals can come up
with some haunting melodies in their show songs, powerful
& impelling with a passion.
They feed off the crowd - the more
they give back. Everyone's a winner. One of the hardest
reviews to complete, the feet want to dance and totally
revel in the entertainment, not afraid of the crowd
they aim to please - everyone is included in the performance.
I get the feeling that if the stage was bigger, then
the whole crowd would be welcome to gather and perform
with Why Wednesday.
Not too many bands could engross
the audience with solely original music and leave them
wanting more. I believe their collective talents have
not even begun to be topped. I believe I have seen the
birth of something huge. A deeper discovery and further
exploration of their talents can only uncover more.
They left me wanting more and I most certainly wasn't
the only one!!! IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC!!
To find out what Why Wednesday are
up to keep a track of our guides, once again another
performance not to be missed.

Tell us about Why Wednesday.
Paul and I got together with a few
other guys in September 2001, our first gig was on September
the 11th and the band sort of went nowhere, we had about
2 years of not doing anything, then we started doing
the acoustic circuit again and realised we want to reform
Why Wednesday and we contacted these guys and got them
on board and the 3 of us have been together for about
a year now and Matt's been with us since the start of
this year, so the band's about 7 months old in this
formation. All are new songs; we're not doing anything
from the old era, so we're sort of a new band.
Why Wednesday has had a few line-up
changes since your debut gig in September 2001, how
do you see Why Wednesday now?
Better songs, bigger sound, stronger
and bigger! There's a balance in the band now, where
before we were having problems with a couple of the
guys wanted to do the cover thing and we don't think
the whole thing was committed. Now that it's right,
we're right in the sense that everyone want to just
play originals and be one unit, which is what the band's
all about.
Why Wednesday EP "Not Fade
Away" is due for release in August, what can we
expect from this album?
Really good road tested songs that
are getting better every time we play them, our songs
are getting better anyway, the new stuff we are writing
now is better than what we played before. We just keep
growing; you got to get 3 or 4 really good varied tunes.
Writing tunes Paul and I started out in the Nucleus
of 2001 but now everyone comes in with a Riff for an
idea and we just jam it.
A big regional tour coming up, what impact do you
think that will have on Why Wednesday?
We're out there to change perceptions
about original music in the regional area, everyone
does the covers so our intent is to get out there and
promote and you know, come and have a look and you can
there is some really good rock still being played out
there and you just got to have a look and open your
mind and see what's there.
What's in store for Why Wednesday
for the rest of 2004?
Bigger new better songs, there's
5 new songs that we are working on at the moment that
are better than the one's that we played tonight, we
know that we are getting better and better and so we
are just looking forward to the end of the year that
we've wrapped up a solid year in growth in putting together
nearly 20 songs and we only see ourselves getting better.
We want to get the name out there, we've spent 2004
getting people on the scene to know Why Wednesday and
we want to spend 2005 getting the people outside the
scene to know Why Wednesday.
