With a versatile, edgy, vocal sound and flamboyant guitar, Ryan Carbray’s cover songs combine all the resonance, depth and fervor of a full musical ensemble. He combines pop, rock, blues and jazz sensibilities, adding his own unique dynamic quality to create new encounters of old favourites.
Emerging from the Conservatorium of Music as a solo artist, Ryan soon returned to his hometown of Perth WA to begin a lengthy career of street performance that has lasted 5 years so far.
2005 - 2007
Gaining fans like wildfire on the street, Ryan’s personal magnetism and performance intuition led to many solo gigs at weddings and private parties, which led to the pub scene.
These 2 years were filled with consistent invitations to play everything from small intimate pub gigs, combined gigs with successful local bands (at venues like the “Indi Bar” in Scarborough and “The Norfolk Hotel” in Fremantle), a charity event held at “The Deen” nightclub in Northbridge and a regular Sunday session at the “Bindoon Hotel.” The leap from Busker to Professional Musician was complete.
2008 - NOW
Over the past 12 months, Ryan has become a staple of the Perth music scene, playing such venues as: “Rosie O’Grady’s” (Fremantle and Northbridge), “The Moon and Sixpence” Woodvale, “Novak’s” Northbridge, “The Kalamunda Hotel”, “The Claremont Hotel”, “The Carlisle Hotel”, and a regular Friday night slot at “The Melbourne Hotel” CBD to name a few. Throw in some private functions, Melbourne Cup Day Gigs, Grand Final Day Gigs and New Years Eve Gigs and your’re starting to get the picture.
Riding high on the wave of excitement and momentum he has created so far, Ryan is in his own words “just getting started.” 2009 will be a big year for Perth’s new solo artist to watch. A Dylanesque leap from acoustic to electric is on the cards, as is the inclusion of some totally new original music. Whether in one of Perths nightspots, beergardens, weddings, or parties Ryan can always be found, guitar in hand, pumping out soaring melodies and positive energy.
“ I just kind of fell in love with the art of performance. Sharing and amplifying positive energy with people. It’s the bomb”
- Ryan (on performance).
