PAUL GIOIA CD LAUNCH
Paul Gioia launches his new CD Rising Sea at The Fly By Night in Fremantle this Saturday night.
For nearly 25 years Paul Gioia has been performing a unique mix of pumped up blues piano and gospel ballads. With a background steeped in blues and jazz, he has performed in a number of solo, duet and band configurations, more recently with Tin Dog. Paul plays with an infectious passion and sensitivity and has earned a reputation for his blues keyboard prowess, both on the piano and Hammond organ.
In 2008 Gioia recorded a new collection of mostly original songs and instrumentals in Rising Sea.
With acoustic piano at the core, the CD features some great jazz and blues musicians including Mat Jodrell, Carl Mackey, Andrew Winton and Dave Billings, as well as Gioia’s own trio members Kris Arnott and Bob Thomson. But for Gioia this album is really about the song, not just the music, with edgy and sometimes provocative lyrics that explore life, love, and the cracks in between.
From wildly joyous and foot-stomping gospel to intensely moving ballads showcasing Kris Arnott’s haunting vocals, the launch promises to leave no-one untouched, with a full band, horn section, gospel choir, as well as many players from the CD and special guests. Support is by Andrew Winton, currently one of the hottest properties on the Australian blues and roots scene, in duo mode with Paul Novosel. Doors open 8.00pm with tickets $15 + bf from www.heatseeker.com.au
